Here is a little history about Canton GA. Canton had its early beginnings as part of an Indian trade route into the Cherokee Nation. Established in 1832, this early frontier was incorporated under the name of Etowah in 1833. Two of the founding fathers had visions of the town becoming a silk center similar to what existed in Canton, China, thus the city was renamed to Canton in 1834.
Although Canton, Georgia did not fulfill it's dream of becoming a major silk center, it did become famous world-wide for the denim it produced by the Canton Cotton Mills. The Cotton Mill industry, established in 1899, provided 1200 jobs for people in the area at it's peak. The last two Cotton Mills closed in 1981. There is a Cotton Mill still in existance today along Riverstone Pkwy that was converted into a loft apartment complex a few years ago. It stands as a reminder of the early beginnings of Canton GA. Canton has successfully survived the transition from a small mill town to a city of prosperity, offering an ideal location for businesses and families alike.
There are lots of things to do around Canton GA. The Historic Canton Theatre on Main Street features plays and other special entertainment events throughout the year. Canton is also host to numerous festivals and special events, including celebrations for the Fourth of July, Christmas, "A Taste of Cherokee" in May and Riverfest and the Cherokee County Fair in September.
Heritage Park is a part of the Etowah River Greenway and consists of approximately 30 acres of passive use pedestrian and bike trails and a natural amphitheater. The city of Canton holds concerts and movies in Heritage Park throughout the summer free of charge to the residents. Phase two of the Etowah River Greenway project will consist of approximately 60 acres of active recreation fields for softball, baseball, tennis and soccer.
Canton Georgia is in partnership with the Metro Atlanta YMCA and constructed a community center on Waleska Street adjoining Heritage Park, that includes a swimming pool, gymnasium, wellness center, aerobics studio, childcare facilities and the Cherokee Sports Hall of Fame.
If you love the water, Canton GA is the place to be. Outside Canton in the city of Waleska, is a private gated community called Lake Arrowhead, which offers a gorgeous combination of mountain and lake property.
Canton completed The Hickory Log Creek Dam and Reservoir project, a new water source for the city that will cover 370 acres and offer 15 miles of shoreline....another great attraction to this already beautiful town.
Bluffs Parkway opened off of Riverstone Blvd. This parkway bisects the Bluffs Technology Park and will be home to 15,000 high tech jobs when built out in 10 years. The Park will also include a satellite campus for Appalachian Tech to train employees of the companies relocating there. The Bluffs Technology Park is modeled after the successful Johns Creek Technology Park in Alpharetta, GA I expect this to be a wonderful boost to Canton Georgia Real Estate values.
Canton offers a free public bus system with established routes to carry thousands of passengers throughout the city from residential areas, to downtown shopping areas, to the medical district and job sites.
